Switching to Glass Food Storage Containers Simplifies Meal Prep and Organization

Considering making the switch from plastic to glass storage containers? While plastic options may be convenient, they often fall short in terms of durability and functionality. Glass containers, on the other hand, offer significant advantages. Many are designed to transition seamlessly from freezer to microwave or oven to table. Their nonporous surfaces resist absorbing odors or stains, unlike plastic alternatives.

With numerous options available, it’s essential to consider factors such as intended use, size, lid design, and the contents of each set. To assist in your decision-making, we tested several highly rated glass storage containers.

How We Evaluated Glass Food Storage Containers

We began by researching top-rated glass containers in various shapes and sizes, selecting over  models for thorough testing in both home kitchens and our dedicated Testing Lab. These containers were used to store leftovers, placed in refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, and ovens, and cleaned according to manufacturer guidelines. To assess durability, we incorporated the containers into daily routines, examined their materials, and noted any damage throughout the process.

Our Observations

1. Food Freshness: To measure effectiveness, we conducted a "freshness test" by placing half a peeled and pitted avocado (cut side down) in each container. The containers were sealed and refrigerated for three days. Afterward, we evaluated the avocado’s appearance and recorded the results.

2. Material Quality: We monitored for stains and odors from foods such as curry or tomato sauce and assessed how easily these were removed. We also evaluated the suitability of the containers for travel or commuting based on weight and size. Additionally, we checked for chips or damage caused by microwaves, dishwashers, or ovens.

3. Versatility and Design Features: We noted whether the containers were stackable or nestable and whether they had design elements that facilitated storage in refrigerators or cabinets. Each container was also used to freeze perishable foods for extended periods and to reheat food in a microwave.

Our Ratings Criteria

1. Durability: We prioritized the longevity of both lids and bases, assessing the thickness of the glass and the ease of opening and closing the lids.

2. Ease of Cleaning:For dishwasher-safe containers, we followed manufacturer instructions to evaluate any potential warping or damage. We also hand-washed each container to identify any challenging areas to clean or leftover food particles in lid crevices.

3. Performance: Each container was filled to maximum capacity with water, sealed tightly, and shaken for one minute to test for leaks. We also evaluated the range of sizes offered in each set and their suitability for storing both large and small quantities.

Through this comprehensive testing process, we identified the most reliable glass storage containers that combine functionality, durability, and ease of use—making them an excellent choice for upgrading your kitchen organization.
